Synopsis:
In America, where nationalism looms, the immigrant is too afraid. On TV and in neighborhoods, he does not feel welcomed, and even when welcomed, uneased. I Swear, I Didn’t Recognize You dissects, through personal stories of the filmmaker’s memories in Baghdad and his life in California, how his existence is overshadowed by an American whiteness that is at its best confusing and at its worst deadly.
